East Midlands

The East Midlands is geographically England’s fourth largest region in terms of area (15,607 sq km) and the second smallest region in terms of population. The region consists of five counties and four unitary districts: Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Northamptonshire and Derby City, Leicester City, Nottingham City and Rutland County, and is one of England’s most diverse regions.

Unlike most other regions, the East Midlands has no dominant regional capital. Nottingham is the centre of public administration for a range of organisations. It is one of England’s nine core cities but is small relative to most of the others, and Derby and Leicester, Lincoln, Northampton, Chesterfield and Mansfield are also significant population centres. In recent years, Nottingham, Derby and Leicester have cooperated as a “3 Cities” partnership, with the support of their county councils.
