Makalu-Barun National Park and Conservation Area was established in 1992. It covers an area of 2,330 sq. kilometers. It is located in Northeast Nepal at the Nepal-Tibet border. This is the only protected area in Nepal with strict laws for nature conservation.

It has some of the richest and most unique plants and animals varieties in Nepal. The region's vegetation includes herbs, grasses, rhododendron and oaks. Wildlife includes red panda, musk deer, clouded leopard, barking deer, wild boar and marmot..
