Although 500km from the ocean today, Richmond was once part of the Ancient Inland Sea. One hundred million years later, scores of marine fossils have been unearthed in the rugged landscape surrounding this Outback Queensland town and are now housed in a world-renowned collection at Kronosaurus Korner, part of the Queensland Heritage Trails Network.

Queensland Heritage Trails Network funding of $1 million enhanced the existing Kronosaurus Korner by extending the museum to provide further exhibition and storage space including a preparation room for fossils, a theatrette, a children’s activities centre, a new kitchen for the museum’s café and upgraded visitor amenities. The museum is now one of the major economic generators for Richmond.

Amongst a mind-boggling 200 separate exhibits, you’ll find Australia’s best vertebrate fossil, the 4.25 metres Richmond Pliosaur discovered in 1989 and the armored dinosaur, Minmi, both 100-million-years old – both discovered by a local grazier. With its fossilised skin intact, Minmi is Australia’s best preserved dinosaur and believed to be one of two of the most complete of its type in the world.Places to see in Queensland
